Heavy metal toxicity at the molecular level – an experimental spectroscopic analysis.
Heavy metal toxicity at the molecular level – an experimental spectroscopic analysis.
We are all aware that heavy metals such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and related elements are toxic.
But why is this so, and what is the underlying mechanism of the toxicity at the molecular level?
So far, there are not many good answers to this question.
With this project, new knowledge on the toxicity of heavy metals is sought by looking at how heavy metal ions interact with proteins and and possibly also nucleic acids. The work will be experimental, where the student takes and active part in the planning of laboratory work. Spectroscopic methods such UV-VIS, FT-IR, fluorescence, PAC as well as linear and circular dichroism can be applied.
